What are the Chances.......

Our city just cancelled the July 4 fireworks for financial reasons. They've always been paid for by community fundraising, and obviously it's not a good year to do that. I would guess that a lot of places will make the same decision.

Washington state department of health is posting numbers for confirmed cases and deaths (from hospitals reporting). Of course this is not all the actual infections since they don't test many people and some are reporting that a large percentage don't show symptoms or have symptoms that are mild and would be considered symptoms of a cold. Anyhow, the Washington data shows that group 0-39yrs had about 27% of confirmed cases with 0% of deaths. 40-60 demographic had 35% of confirmed cases and 8% of deaths. what is important to remember is that a large percentage of the the 8% of deaths are people that have serious health conditions (not healthy people). Healthy people from 0-60 years probably have a 0.002% chance of mortality from the virus and have greater chances of dying from other common diseases and traffic accidents.

I think it is really irresponsible for these governments to keep people under 60 years old that are healthy from working and operating their business and they will EVENTUALLY allow them to out of necessity since people can't go months with no income. The stats show that there is little risk for these folks (especially if they hand wash and take other preventative measures to minimize infection). Unfortunately most of these states have people making decisions that are not what we would call the "best and brightest" and have minimal knowledge of economics and the consequences of hand grenading the economy!! They will eventually get to the same point but after causing serious damage to people's ability to live and there will be consequences. whether they were smart enough to see this now or not it will eventually be that healthy working age folks will be back to work and the unhealthy and older will have to stay isolated until there is an effective treatment or vaccine (they don't have a SARS vaccine even though it has been 17 years since SARS). Life will be VERY different for a segment of society that is vulnerable but it is stupid to damage the economy for people that have little to no risk with simple hygiene and care taken.

Yes, I understand fully that there are many people who, like yourself, think your short-term economic situation is more important than my life. After all, at age 67, how many years am I likely to have left anyway? By the way, you should note that "obesity" is one of the "health conditions" that make you vulnerable (doesn't apply in my case), as are things like previously undiscovered heart conditions. And you know, death is not the only negative outcome; look at the hospitalization numbers as well. Younger and healthier people survive a week in the ICU much better, but it's bad news often with long-term consequences, and much more so if there are no beds left in the ICU when you get there.

The data is starting to show that we have over-reacted (sometimes its best to over-react). Data is also starting to show that we all need to be in better health. Obesity is a large contributing factor. Our country has a problem with this.
I am encouraged that the talk is shifting now to how do we reopen and get things moving. How do we limit the damage done to our country and how do we start returning to normal.
I would be surprised if there is much for public displays on the 4th. I am optimistic that my retail sales will be good.

People would think if they were the ones having to pay the hospital bills if THEY get the virus, If people want to do anything- good. BUT, why should they put the rest of people in danger either, Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It's about what's best for ME in this ME generation, OR people didn't learn from the 2008 crisis and to get their credit issue in check and are in the same ordeal now.

That's a pretty piss poor reason for putting others in danger because you have to have the newest phone, car or a house you can't afford. Yes, it's about time for people to look forward, we can't live in fear either. But seeing asses doing everything because it's their right-is wrong.

You get a different perspective when your closer to the end than the beginning. Our country needs to get back on track. But being pissed about a town canceling a display where 1,000's, no 10,000's show and what if 15-20 has the virus, yep- all over again.

If I got it and died- so be it. But, I would be fit to be killed if some clown gave it to my son and he died. watch out. Those are the asses that piss me off.

Ask the employees of Smithfield meats in Sioux City, SD. What? 400 people? Ask their families in a few weeks. Oh, And it is owed by the Chinese also. But in China they can throw that many down in the hole and say next---seen it. Oh, they probably did that with all the lives lost building fireworks that we enjoy. That;s the difference between us and China.

SEE QUOTE ABOVE FOR DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO SPREAD COVID -19

I fear much of the over reaction, and subsequent resistance to relaxing that over reaction, is going to be driven by CYA... :(

In the current "us~vs~them" polarization, where apparently with the advantage of 20-20 hindsight everybody's going to claim to have been Geniuses and would have made Perfect decisions themselves, there's going to be an avalanche of criticism for every action. Faced with all the ensuing Fake News no politician can afford to take Any Chances.

Society Really Does SUCK now!!!

China did a better job than most countries at defeating the virus and getting back to work to save our ass (my country and yours) by getting up and running to provide Masks, gowns and all the other PPE our health Care Workers need. Negative news stories about the less than 10th of 1% of the products being faulty have caused China to put restrictions on the export of medical devices to ensure that this stops. The real story is the greatest humanitarian airlift in Human History coming out of China right now. It is time to stop politicizing the Covid-19. The world needs to pull together to save lives. All this BS of China covering things up is all about Crooked local officials that tried to hide the Corona virus the same way the local officials tried to hide bodies after a fireworks accident to keep business open.
China's Federal government is trying to control local officials. But if you have ever traveled to any extent through China you understand vast expanse of heavily populated areas. This huge dense population makes it difficult to control and makes it easy for the crooked factory owners and local officials to hide. Also for the fake news about China trying to hide Covid cases here is a website operating with the full cooperation of China's government that shows where every Covid-19 case is Isolated in their house under observation ( Go to near the bottom of the page and click the big red button that says "Click Query" on it)
I like other fireworks guys are plugged in to the gossip network in Liuyang Hunan China. They had 4 cases there and they only 220 miles from the outbreak epicenter of Wuhan and the density of the population is much greater than anywhere in North America. So instead of all the politics lets just look at what works and do it. Another country that is doing a great job on this is Taiwan. They are a free and democratic country with 23.7 million mostly dense population and they have only 388 cases so far. They have not stopped working or going to school. Time for the the politics to stop and all us humans together on this world to work together. Our weenie military here in Canada has a plan for this so I am sure the great military forces of the USA do too. Maybe it is time for the politicians to step aside and let the military run it. At least then it would be run on a technocratic/crisis management basis by an effective chain of command. Not Screwed up by the politicians and their committees.

Well- since 90-95% of protective gear in MADE IN CHINA- why wouldn't they be able to control the virus better?? They control people moving around their country, they control news media in their country, they control people coming into their country- So yes they did do a better job than we did.

Now- how many people want to be the same as the Chinese and give up their liberties(I don't)BUT, maybe it's time people act accountable and stop this garbage of "ME". Hey they can build fireworks here to and when something happens your buddy will be shoved down a hole and "Next".

It's time for our country to be proactive than reactive. Cut the aide being given out by this country and use it to build up supplies that should be built in this country. To go one further-Next time maybe electronics should be built here for security also.

Smithfield to next to no steps to do anything to protect their employees. That is not how most of us in sd operate.

I believe the Chinese news media right now about this because they are under the laser focus of their people. There is nothing more important to them than maintaining social order. Everyone knows they screwed up at the beginning. they are committed to come out of this looking Honorable.

I also have friends in several locations of china that say it is business as usual. I am not meaning to talk politics here. I saying maybe right now when they are helping us maybe the media should stop kicking sand in their face. Also just looking at the models of how to control the virus that are and have worked.

Time to put politics aside and just look at how we can kick this viruses ass and get back to normal.

Guess I'm going to get political but who would believe anything the Chinese government would say, they are behind this %110

Okay let,s put away the tinfoil hat. Nobody is behind this but a virus that mutated from some animal to a bat to a civet cat or something like that. Other viruses come from Pigs and poultry that we raise here in high density barns. Mutation of viruses have always happened moving from species to species. There is valid criticism about the wild animal trade and the way the wet markets were run, And China has now permanently banned that. But this virus could come out of a Canadian or American poultry or hog barn just as easily. Thing is any opinion about where it came and how something should have been done differently in the past is not going to help anybody now. We need to stop putting out this negativity and focus on cooperation. I have friends in China and all of them want to help us and that would be the same opinion of most of the Chinese. It's funny how when you get to know people all over the world you see everyone for the most part is the same. We all want to take care of our family friends and community and country. Now we gotta start thinking the same way about the world to beat this virus.

I have really come to dislike how with social media and the internet how the lines between facts, opinion BS and science have become blurred.

First of all they kicked out all the foreign news media OR restricted the ones that were left.

The federal government should fined and almost look at the laws that were broken at the Smithfield in SD. This is more than just work comp issues and at best is criminal weather they had illegal immigrates or not. It's lame in this country that we are selling our basic needs to foreign countries. People are going to die and if this was US owned processor- They would slam the owners with prison sentences.

That's the biggest difference between the US and China/India- we hold people accountable when criminal acts happen, The problem now is we have 2 different codes- US companies, Foreign companies.

There is no doubt in my mind that, for political reasons, China has UNDER Counted their cases while here in the US we are OVER Counting. NY added over 1,000 deaths to their virus totals in a single day because anyone who had died at-home, and was taken directly to the morgue, for the weeks before suddenly became Covid19 deaths (no heart attacks, strokes, asthma , or any other sudden illnesses caused a death during that time period)...

Wow... Where to start.
First the only "facts" we really know, is this crap started in China, spread to the rest of the World, and a hell of a lot of people are dying from it. There are a lot of theories and face saving comments being made. The truth will likely come out over time (whatever it is).

When refering to a country who doesn't think twice about slaughtering their own people, it seems almost sacrilege to say Chinese and Humanitarian in the same sentence.

Excuse me for the lack of praise for the Chinese, who first told us Covid19 did not spread by human to human contact. Who's inept handling of this from the beginning is responsible for the spreading throughout the World. Humanitarian? How about "face saving" to mask their inept handling of this from the get go.

Chinese Humanitarians.... probably the same words you would use after the US finishes trialing the vaccines and antibodies already developed in record time, gives the secret sauce the to world, and the Chinese make it in their factories and profit from it.

Since those awesome highly skilled Chinese doctors are so competent in "doing a better job of defeating the virus" perhaps the Canucks will flock to China for medical care.
