My opinion:
Using an item to adapt another item to something to make it work is just waiting for failure. Just finished a weekend with my fellow misfits (yes I include myself). Sat, a pro show, I can't say for the cake count. Assisting the lead doing a tube clear. Had 1 commercially chain blow mid chain. Cause unknown. 2 matches ignited but pyro failed to launch. Black match pinched/choked off. 3 match fail to light. Bad connection?? Continuity shows it is connected but not the amperage it can handle. I didn't grab the match to test (I should have, oh well) 600+ Imatch quick connect, MAYBE 2 box E-Match. All MJG. That was the commercial show.
I shot at my Son's house on Sunday. 18 cues split over 3 positions. 47 I-match in total. All MJG. 100% ignition 2 cross fire on 2 cakes. I am licensed in TX. I carry an ATF employee possessor with most I shoot for. I could have used E-Match BUT WHY?
Combined use over 700 I-Match & 60 E-Match in total.
We punched our cakes. Even though those commercial shells have match ports, we still used I-Match. 4/10 of 1 percent failure .0039.
Punching a cake is dangerous? IF you stupidly punch into flash, YUP. If you use anything that has a potential to create a spark, YUP.
Black powder (lift) does not ignite under pressure. It ignites by a high heat source. CPSC tests on consumer pyro. Part of there test is to subject consumer pyro to oven heat.
Research into it when you have a chance. It is not very hard to master.
Notes I follow in punching cakes.
1) Never pre-punch and match. There have been documented cases of reaction (ignition) between the match and black powder comp.
2) This one is personal preference. I cut the fuse to a stub and punch aside the hole the fuse goes thru. Fire in is FIRE in. I have read many and have talked to some saying leave the fuse intact. I tape my match in place on the actual tube. I cut out the BS wrapper
