How to approach the neighbors in regards to fireworks?

So the wife and I just bought our first house, which sits in a cul de sac. We live in a state that just went safe and sane. We're having a house warming/4th of July party on July 3rd. All my family and friends know I'm a massive pyro and will be expecting a show of more than just safe and sane, which I am happy to oblige them in. The cul de sac has more than adequate space to handle small 200g cakes.

Here's the problem. I don't want to be the new neighbor that just start shooting loud stuff and being a jerk. I was originally going to print up a letter to put in the mailboxes of the close neighbors to tell them of my plan to shoot on the 3rd. The note would encourage them to let me know if noise is a problem for them or their pets. A friend said that it was a bad idea to put anything in writing as it could be evidence of intent to commit a crime. Do you guys think this is a bad idea being that safe and sane is legal? I wouldn't be saying what I was intending to shoot, just that it might get loud. I could always go door to door but I don't want to be walking up to peoples houses that I don't know just to tell them about fireworks, that seems kind of weird too.

Just wondering what everyone thinks. Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.

Don’t do the mail box thing! Couple problems— it’s illegal, it could also be construed as an “invite” or “public” display and has potential to classifying you under the fullest extent of the law as putting on an unlicensed display. If it’s a “public” show even 1.4 becomes bound as 1.3 regulations.

Is this your “forever home”?

Your best bet is to casually feel out the neighbors closest and spread from out there.

Not a hey “I’m gonna shoot” but a “so what goes on here around the fourth”.

Year one you might be bound to 96s color of pearls in the back yard until you got a neighbor leaning over the fence watching or somebody else starts popping canisters off a door down.

Question: with all these people there, where are they parking if you can still shoot in the street?

That's a damn good question that I didn't think about. With cars parked the distances are gonna be way too close for even the smallest 200g. It's funny you mention the 96 shot color pearls because that's exactly what I was already starting to lean towards, your question about the parking just made it a lot more likely. I may just have to get creative with fountains and pinwheels and other small things. Besides, the party is on the 3rd. I still have the 4th, as well as a good shoot spot, for the big stuff in the stash. Thanks for the info Pyrotechnick, much appreciated!

there are a lot more small 200 gram cakes that you could shoot that wouldn't set you back that much and won't be much of a bother to anyone.

happy's
color pearls
100sh magical barrage
desert at night
garden in spring
twitter glitter (small and large)
mighty cobra

these are cakes that have been around the industry for decades and anyone you shop with should carry them...

none of these likely to upset anyone and you can do a lot with little stuff, especially if you shoot them in fans or walls.

I had done this at my home for years, and started by letting each neighbor know that I would be doing some "smaller" consumer fireworks during a family and friends party, and invited them to join as well. My 3 surrounding neighbors were all very cool with it, hopefully you will have equal success.

Stoney you still setting July 26th/27th aside for MPAG 20th anniversary? 3 major shows set up. The big boys and their built stuff, the little guys and about every vendor in the state donating product to and a 3/4 mile mascelta plus normal shooting and good times.

Yup Stoney, I was planning on picking up most of those on your list and shooting in multiples. Isn't' it crazy to think that 35 years ago all those cakes would have been top of the line performers, lol

Indeed. Picked up a second job after last season, stacked up some cash, buying a new car after the 4th. Honestly it's the only thing that's been keeping me from going to these shows and hanging with everyone. I have a long sorted history with buying beaters and driving them till they fall apart. I'm currently looking to push my old cop car off a cliff and find something cooler that can get me more than to work and back. Look forward to going to quite a few shoots this fall now that i'm not poor. lol

sweet... yeah anything small without breaks in it should be fine, even for parked cars nearby. lil pearl shooters with no inserts aren't going to bother anyone so long as you ABC.

lol, you can shoot a few fireworks fiestas for the finale

(y)

Oh for sure. We were just talking about it at the shop today after I made this post... about how the old school 90 shot round 9 to a case cakes (like blossom after thundering) were the best you could get for a while there. people used to love those, couldn't keep them in stock...

that and the hexagon shaped ones.

hahaha

really makes you appreciate the large bore low shot count cakes and zippers we all have access to now.

Stoney that’s awesome to hear! Look forward to it. How many cases of lone wolf could you manage to haul with you?

Shot just the 1st one last month that I picked up from ya last year. Brought me a grin and a desire to do a 3-5min barrage of them!

Just be prepared to have the police show up at your house I don't know what the fines are in your state but some states would fine you $1000 and make you serve some jail time

Highly unlikely. I've been approached by the police numerous times in the past and have NEVER been ticketed. As long as you're not a dick when they show up they will just give you a warning. Since I posted I have heard numerous people in my neighborhood lighting canister shells and salutes. I'm sure the cops are going to be more concerned with them than with me and my fountains and 96 shot color pearls.

Btw, thanks for the negativity!

I think we live in the same state (NJ) and I just heard a report that warnings will be given and if they have to come back a second time it's a $100 fine. They won't come out until someone calls, unless you have a hyper aggressive police force.

I'd probably be most concerned with debris landing on cars and the neighbors property. That never fails to piss people off. It's usually a pet owner that's motivated to call first.

I'll shoot the South Brunswick show July 3rd and on the 4th I'll be lighting fountains in the front yard.

Believe me, if the cops come and give me a warning I'm not stupid enough to keep shooting. I'll be doing fountains and kaleidoscopes etc in the neighborhood on the 3rd. On the 4th I go to my old stomping ground where I'm friends with a bunch of the cops so I don't have to worry.
