Do 4” cans actually have 60 grams of comp?

The best canister shell choice for you is a great question and quite subjective. I would ask you all as I haven’t checked it, can there be 60 grams in a 4” shell due to its size. I had heard recently that most have 52-53grams and that only 5” cans have enough space to carry 60 grams. What do you all know?

Having had a long conversation with a factory owner the answer I got was yes, a 4" shell is not big enough to hold 60 grams. There are some youtube videos that also show 4" shells don't have a full 60 grams. It's an up to 60 grams thing like up to 200 grams or up to 500 grams.

That’s a great response and what I had heard as well. Raccoon Fireworks sure has some nice products!

Ok... I have to disagree with 4" not able to hold 60grams total powder weight. There are several 4" shells that do in fact hold 58-59 grams of comp, and you truly could go over those limits with just 4" shells. You know why they are 52-53 grams, because it best to be legal.

Do you have names of these shells? or better yet factory codes? I'd like to know if what I'm being told from china is true or just BS.

I seem to recall John Walter testing the Pyroland Neon 4" shells and they were topping out right at 59 with enough room to spare for another gram. He had also tested the Brother's 4" Quest shells with similar results. If that full extra inch was necessary for another gram, then why is there a big 1" gap below the top disk on virtually everyone's 5" shell? This includes those who are responsible for perpetrating the 5" gimmick to begin with. They could have easily added another .25" if it was really necessary.

A 4" canister shell has more than enough room for the fully 60g. Most shells on the market don't have it though. The average is around 50g. 5" shells are pure marketing. What you do get with a 5" shells is more dirt in the top plug. That's not to say there aren't some nice 5" shells, there are, but they're just marketing.

I've wondered why that is after watching the shell weighing videos and I have to agree. Because these things aren't made to exact specifications or tolerances, they don't put he max in. This leave a bit of leeway that will come from their manufature. Better to play it safe. I also doubt there's a huge difference in performance in doing so.
